Keyframe Animation

Short Canadian film from 1971 demonstrating a vector animation technology, a precursor to Flash:

This is a digital dub of a 7 minute, 45 second 16 mm film produced in 1971 by the National Research Council of Canada, in Ottawa. It demonstrates not only one of the first ineractve computer systems for animation, one used for production, it was also an outstanding example of early user-centred design.

The system was developed by Marceli Wein and Nestor Burtnyk, both of whom won Academy Awards for this influential work.

Test scores plummet — so Florida drops passing grade

Florida gave a new standardized writing test to students in various grades and the scores were worse than awful. Only 27 percent of fourth-graders had proficient scores on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT), which was down from last year’s 81 percent.

State education officials panicked, and at an emergency meeting last week, the Florida Board of Education decided in a 4-3 vote that the best thing to do was to lower the passing score on this exam.

Let me repeat that: In order to make sure that students succeeded on the test, the passing grade was lowered.

Will People Alive Today Have the Opportunity to Upload Their Consciousness to a New Robotic Body? | Popular Science:

So did you hear about the paralyzed woman who can control a robotic arm? The tiny sensor is an array of electrodes connected to a bundle of gold wires and it is implanted in the motor cortex.

You realize the potential, right? I just wonder how long until we can transfer actual consciousness into a machine. Perhaps not everybody would opt to live forever, but even if you got bored then you could just terminate the host program, or the machine itself.

And occupying myself and a virtual space simultaneously would be cool. Would definitely add a new level to day dreaming. “Yeah, I’d like the Imagination RAM Upgrade Package.” You could probably start running software like in the Matrix. Learn to play golf and what not. ;)

I reckon you’d probably just be renting a “virtual pod” from Google or Amazon or somebody. Imagine the potential for “virtual vacations”.

People keep clamoring for the hoverboard, but I think a holodeck would be way cooler. ;)
